Meanwhile, elsewhere…

A few bits and pieces from where I've been spending my time recently: "Robertson Sound".

canx

This was the scene outside of Toronto City Hall this afternoon – news trucks packing up and heading home.

Rob Ford continues as Toronto's Interim Mayor. If he can hold on to power until July 23 – less than six more months – then he will have spent more time as Mayor of Toronto than Sarah Palin spent as Governor of Alaska.

(For what it's worth, the most recent population figures I can find gives Toronto 2.62 million people, while Alaska has 0.72 million.)

While I think that the recent court proceedings have revealed Rob Ford as a man completely unsuited to the job he has, I understand and approve of the reasoning behind the court decision that allows him to stay. I also think the whole issue of whether or not he's the mayor is fairly irrelevant, and the side-show distraction of having him stay will probably be less damaging than the one that would happen if he were removed.

Of course, there's still the issue of some rather questionable election financing, so this circus isn't over yet.

Three Random Subjects

Nothing much in common here, except that they were all taken from the same spot with a Nikon 500mm f/4 telephoto. In truth I've barely used any camera so far this year, being preoccupied with other projects, so using better than $10K of camera gear to take a photo of a fire truck seems about right.

And I can't believe that I missed my new year's tradition this year, even though it started accidentally seven years ago and has been only sporadically followed since then. This last photo – something of a repeat of the one from last year – is about as close as I made it this year, despite planning on having a better one.

Model Railroad

Photos from the Model Railroad Club of Toronto in December 2012. They've been in this space since 1946, but will be moving to a new location in the spring. Most of this layout will be demolished, and the club expects to spend two years rebuilding before they reopen to the public once again.

I visited this club for the first time with my father more than twenty-five years ago, so it's fitting that my second visit, which these photos are from, was with him as well.

I have broken the links to hundreds and hundreds of photos, which will take a long time to repair. The workaround is to replace "photo.matthewpiers" in the link URL with "matthewpiers.smugmug". Awkward, but only temporary.

This is happening because I have revamped matthewpiers dot com. More of what I write and photograph will be going there, so check it out as well.
