Happy New Year III

I was ready to post a more recent image when I remembered that I had this photo from New York City. It's not much, but it fits my running New Year's theme.

I suspect that I'll remember 2010 as the year that I got things right - a time of successful resolutions and building new patterns. Things are good.

Goodnight, New York

Three variations from the same window of the Park Central hotel.

There might still be the occasional NYC photo in the future, but it would have to be a late bloomer. I've just gotten a couple of rolls of film back from the lab (135 and 120) so I might have something new to show sooner or later.

Probably later.

MoMA-AGO

I was very lucky to happen to be in New York while MoMA was staging a special exhibit of abstract expressionist paintings. Now I've heard a rumour that this same exhibit will be at the AGO in the spring. It may be time to get a membership.

Two great things, beyond getting to see it again: the AGO won't permit photography, so I'll be able to enjoy the exhibit mostly unannoyed, and I'll finally be able to say "Well, when I saw this in New York…"

Flatiron (Colour)

A couple more views of the flatiron building.

I'm almost out of New York photos, which is a problem, because I haven't taken any since we got back.

#257, Classics

I thought it would only be polite to visit the Met's antiquities before heading over to their modern art collection.

(Actually, that's not true. I got lost.)

#247, The Met

While it's frequently upstaged by grander institutions, the Metropolitan Museum of Art is still moderately popular.

#892, Grand Central

Another obligatory photo, there was a crowd with cameras at the edge of the stairs that gets this view. Not a place to linger.

#818, Long Island

Industry on the East river and an empty barge.

#885, Park Avenue

If there was going to be a single photo that I'd title 'New York', this could be it. Taken somewhere along Park, I was going for a walk to see an intersection that's mentioned in a song I like. Nothing special - just New York.

#845, 30E75

The Whitney, which was closed on the day that I went to see it. It was a tuesday.

I'll get to it next time.

#805, Rockefeller (Monochrome)

Back to black and white for a bit.

#788, Rockefeller (Colour)

One more colour photo before the return to black and white.

#985, La Liberté Éclairant le Monde

Some photos have to be taken.

#855, Blackbird

A detail from the tail section of an SR-71 'Blackbird' reconnaissance plane, designed to fly very quickly very high over sovereign nations. This aircraft is currently on display at the Intrepid Air and Space Museum, which is an aircraft carrier docked on the Hudson River.

The idea of "American Exceptionalism" has been appearing in the American political discourse a lot recently - perversely, that there isn't enough of it - which I just don't understand. But it's refreshing to hear so many syllables in just two words, especially since the word 'jingoism' seems like such a synonym these days.

I have broken the links to hundreds and hundreds of photos, which will take a long time to repair. The workaround is to replace "photo.matthewpiers" in the link URL with "matthewpiers.smugmug". Awkward, but only temporary.

This is happening because I have revamped matthewpiers dot com. More of what I write and photograph will be going there, so check it out as well.
