I have broken the links to hundreds and hundreds of photos, which will take a long time to repair. The workaround is to replace "photo.matthewpiers" in the link URL with "matthewpiers.smugmug". Awkward, but only temporary.
This is happening because I have revamped
matthewpiers dot com. More of what I write and photograph will be going there, so check it out as well.

I'm really enjoying the bricks in so many of your recent photos.
Texture and exposure are awesome, as are the ultra-precise compositions. So you--so perfect.
Unlike ST crowd I really prefer the 2nd stairs photo. It's real and true and gritty, and I love the light. Worried about the banding I see at high-iso like 'Hectic'. What's the story on that?

Thanks, Keith; I've been going through a period of productivity recently, and the brick wall is one of the themes that's pretty strong. To think that most people simply use them for test shots...
The banding on 'Hectic' is from my pushing the E-510 far past its comfort level. The LiveMOS sensor shows banding at iso1600, and appears when iso800 is pushed too hard. That photo was shot with a slow lens for hand-held IR, and the resulting file was underexposed by at least two stops and pushed about as hard as I could.
For comparison: 'Square' is from the same camera, but it was on a tripod for a 30 second exposure at iso400. It still has a definite grain to it, but the exposure was better and the photo wasn't pushed as hard. And no, there's really no good reason to be taking photographs in infrared of inorganic subjects in the shade.
The second stairs photo - 'Stairs' - is a stack of three photos taken with my E-3. This side of the building was in sun at mid-day, giving something like an 8-second exposure at iso200. The lighting and the soft-edged shadows is partly the result of how much the sun moved during the minute or two that it took me to shoot the sequence that makes up the final image.
