Safway

This isn't a photo that I would normally post. It was a snapshot of a vaguely interesting set of lines that I saw on my walk home today, sloppily done and hand-held letting the camera guess where I wanted the focus to be. Taken at f/5.6 with the 50/1.4G, it has ambivalent depth of field that isn't enough to capture a lot of the detail and isn't shallow enough to shroud it in mystery.

But then I looked a little closer.

Waukesha is a place that I've heard of: it's the home of Mike Johnston, who has created one of the very best photographer's blogs on the English-language internet.

Seeing his town's name was a little like running into a minor celebrity.

This also marks my first blog post with my new D800. The second photo still isn't quite a 100% crop.

High Pressure

One of my regrets with the D700 is that I didn't take it out to play as much as I should have. This is a recent photo, but it was taken in the underground parking garage that was where I really tried out its low-light abilities for the first time.

High-iso photography with a camera that could see in the dark was never really my goal, but it's a nice thing to do every now and then.

Reopening Soon

I'm looking forward to hearing what the total snowfall for this winter has been in downtown Toronto – if it's more than six centimetres, I'd be shocked.

Blue

This one is my favourite from the 2012 Auto Show, and one of only two that I might want to print.
