Penny has opened a shop on Etsy - thepolishedpenny.etsy.com - for her hand-made silver jewellery. It's well worth a browse.

I've been encouraged to experiment more with colour for her shop photos, and I like the results. This is one of my favourite photos so far, but there are a lot that I really like. This is a really big part of what I do, and are photos that I enjoy taking, so I'll occasionally be posting some of the photos and the stories behind them here.

Something that I noticed with a colleagues' photos is that even an unremarkable scene is given extra weight if it's photographed with film.

I hear using a manual focus camera earns extra style points, but I still prefer my Nikon F100 to my old Yashica rangefinders.

This weekend I'll be heading back to my old neighbourhood with Penny for the first time. There's a Gem & Mineral show being held in the arena where I played hockey as a kid. I had a perfect record for my first season - the team lost every game that I played. I was left wing - call it foreshadowing - and my physical skills were matched by my knowledge of the game.

I was six.

Of course, it could have been the coach's fault.

I can't look at this and not smile.

The cherry blossoms were out in force on Monday, weeks earlier than usual. By Thursday, when I took this photo, some of the petals were already starting to fall.

I just got my first roll of 135 transparency developed - Fujichome Provia 400X.

Everyone else would call that 'slide film'.

This could be one of my favourite photos of the (admittedly young) year, even though the words are out of focus. I may be branching out a bit.

(1014) #009, Red and Green

After a week of rain, everything is turning green.

Or rusting.

In Bobcaygeon for the weekend, I took a few shots in my most-photographed spot.

Compare this with April 11, 2008.

I have broken the links to hundreds and hundreds of photos, which will take a long time to repair. The workaround is to replace "photo.matthewpiers" in the link URL with "matthewpiers.smugmug". Awkward, but only temporary.

This is happening because I have revamped matthewpiers dot com. More of what I write and photograph will be going there, so check it out as well.
